    The host of this symposium is the Faculty of Forestry of Mulawarman University and co-organized with Kreativa Organizer Samarinda.     Tropical forests are the Earth’s biologically richest ecosystems which can provide numerous ecosystem services. The history of human existence and civilization is intertwined with forests. Forest provide goods and services in which people depend on.Yet tropical forests have been under great pressure over the last two decades, and they seem to continue to be so. Rapid globalizationand industrial farming, logging, mining, and biofuel productionare emerging as the dominant drivers of tropicaldeforestation. Therefore, strategies to enhance the contributions of our remaining forests to livelihoods are important in the situation where unsustainable and economic crises continue to threaten tropical forests.

    The good news is that growing public concernsabout environmental sustainability are creating importantnew opportunities for forest management which put forward on environmental priorities.Many scientists have been involved in tropical forest studies as well asspecific research on people who rely on forests for their lives. It is obvious that forestry is an enormous interdisciplinary process which touches on a great variety of disciplines and interest groups.

    In this context, the Forestry Faculty of Mulawarman University will conductthe 1st International Symposiumon Tropical Forestry and Environmental Sciences by inviting scientists and practitioners as well as graduate students from universities around the world to sound their possible contributions in the designing of a successful programme for tropical forest sustainability with various current ideas and innovations.Even though this event may not lead to any clear-cut solutions, it is hoped that they will stimulate further reflection on the way forward for tropical forest management.
