The aim of this research is to study some aspects that are supporting the achievement for the development of Production Forest Authority Unit (Kesatuan Pemangkuan Hutan Produksi). A case study was conducted on KPHP Bengalon in Kutai Timur Regency.

This research was conducted in an area that had been planned to be a KPH in Kutai Timur Regency, that is KPHP Bengalon that includes eight districts, they are Karangan, Kongbeng, Muara Wahau, Rantau Pulung, Batu Ampar, Telen, Muara Bengkal and Long Mesangat.

This research combines methodologies of documentation-study obtained from various sources of secondary data and direct collection method of primary information from the field through interview technique; structured interview and unstructured interview (through questioner). A field observation was taken within the research location to obtain a validation of secondary data.

The result shows that there were four aspects supporting the formulation of independent KPHP Bengalon in Kutai Timur Regency, including: 1. Certainty of area status, 2. Natural Resources Potential, 3. KPHP Financing and 4. Society Participation. All of those aspects are important factors in the realization of KPHP Bengalon.

Suggestion of this research is that it is needed to: 1) inventorize natural resources in the protection-forest area of KPHP Bengalon , 2). determine potential natural resource that can be commercialized as financing source for KPHP Bengalon. 3). To maximally involve society participation in the management of KPHP Bengalon.
